The Corps Marshal, Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, Dauda Biu, has tasked special marshals in the country to exhibit the highest level of discipline and professionalism towards eradicating road accidents in line with best global practices.

Biu, represented by Corps Commander, Shoba Akande, gave the advice at the sideline of a one-day sectoral special marshals workshop held on Wednesday in Osogbo.

The theme of the workshop was: โ€œVolunteerism in Road Safety Management: Limits and Possibilitiesโ€.

He said that the workshop, in collaboration with stakeholders, would help in accomplishing FRSC 2023 corporate strategic goals.

โ€These goals will help in enhancing road safety partnerships for innovative interventions and also accomplishing a five per cent reduction in traffic accidents and injuries.

โ€It will also improve capacity for data collection, analysis and enhance safety policy formulation,โ€ Biu said.

According to him, โ€œthe need to always review activities and also analyse the impact of the activities in reduction of road traffic accidents in Nigeria is paramount.โ€

Biu, therefore, said the workshop would broaden the psyche of all participants and also yield the expected harvest by road users in Nigeria.

Earlier, the Zonal Commanding Officer in charge of Osun, Oyo and Ondo, Meshach Jatau, charged special marshals to brace up and prepare to collaborate with regular marshals to reduce accidents to their barest minimum.

Jatau commended the corps marshal for his relentless efforts geared towards ensuring safety on highways across the country.

He expressed optimism that the workshop would empower participants with the requisite knowledge in safety administration.

The Zonal Commanding Officer said that safety is a shared responsibility among stakeholders, which must be practicalised rather than left in the hands of the regular marshals alone.

In his welcome address, the National Co-ordinator for Special Marshals, John Ugbebor, commended the corps for giving them the necessary support to ensure the eventโ€™s success.

Ugbebor, represented by Tunji Ajiboye, said the marshals would not relent in ensuring professionalism in the discharge of their volunteering services.

He said the workshop is a testament to its commitment towards professionalism.

According to him, the knowledge and skills acquired from the workshop will significantly impact the daily activities of special marshals.

Also, the Osun Sector Commander, Henry Benamaisia, promised to ensure that the 700-plus special marshals in the state work towards achieving its targeted mandate.

Benamaisia called for the support of all transport stakeholders and other security sister agencies in making highways free of accidents.
