Nigerian world champion Tobi ‘Tobi Express’ Amusan won the women’s 100 metres hurdles gold medal at the Stockholm Diamond League meeting on Sunday.

The defending champion of the women’s 100 metres hurdles category in the Diamond League ran a dominating time of 12.52s (0.9) to beat her closest challenger Sarah Lavin of Ireland, who ran 12.73s, her personal best.

Meanwhile, Pia Skrzyszowska of Poland finished third in the race with a time of 12.78s. Some of the other events for the day, including pole vault, were disrupted and delayed due to a heavy downpour.

“I am excited to be out here competing and it is great to get the win on the back of Lausanne (silver),” Amusan said. “The rain stopped but it was still very cold. I am not very happy with where I am but I trust in the process even when it is not necessarily processing right.”

However, Amusan is not only the African who shone in Sweden as South Africa’s Akani Simbine sprinted to back-to-back Diamond League titles to win the men’s 100m with a time of 10.03s.

Another South African, Zakhiti Nene, crossed the line in 45.30s to claim gold in the men’s 400 meters, edging out Nigeria’s Emmanuel Bamidele (45.48s).

Britain’s Matthew Hudson-Smith came third with 45.57s.

Kenya’s Beatrice Chebet ran a time of 14:36.52 to dominate the women’s 5,000m. Ethiopia’s Freweyni Hailu won the women’s 1500m with a time of 4:02:31 in a race her compatriots Diribe Welteji and Hirut Meshesha finished second and third, respectively.

With a time of 8:09.84, Morocco’s Soufiane El Bakkali won the 3000m steeplechase to continue his winning streak. The 27-year-old is the reigning Olympic, World Championships and Diamond League champion.
