The Conference of United Political Parties (CUPP) has criticized the simultaneous absence of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima, labeling it a significant failure of leadership.

OsunDailyNG reports that this rebuke comes after the two leaders embarked on foreign trips despite Nigeria grappling with mounting economic, security, and currency crises.

CPeter Ahmeh, National Secretary of the CUPP, voiced the coalitionโ€™s concerns, stating, โ€œThe simultaneous absence of President Tinubu and Vice President Shettima from the country is an unacceptable dereliction of duty. At a time when Nigeria is facing challenges, including a declining economy, worsening insecurity, and a depreciating naira, their decision to leave is both irresponsible and unpatriotic.โ€

Ahmeh emphasized that this leadership gap exacerbates Nigeriaโ€™s already precarious situation.

โ€œWith the naira plummeting to record lows and inflation soaring, the country is in desperate need of strong, consistent leadershipโ€”not absenteeism,โ€ he said.

He further noted that the absence of both leaders creates a governance vacuum, stalling critical decisions and further weakening Nigeriaโ€™s fragile economy.

The CUPP Scribe said: โ€œThe presidencyโ€™s reassurances hold little weight, as the power vacuum is evident. How can Nigeria expect international investment and support when its leaders are absent?โ€

Ahmeh called for immediate action, urging both leaders to return and tackle the nationโ€™s pressing issues.

He also called on the National Assembly to take steps to address the governance shortfall, stating, โ€œThough we have almost lost faith in the National Assemblyโ€™s leadership, we still urge them to ensure accountability and prevent further lapses in governance.โ€
