A prominent member of the All Progressive Congress (APC) in Delta, Tonye Timi, has urged the partyโs leadership in the state to come together and strengthen the organization in preparation for the 2025 elections, warning that failure to do so could lead to its decline.
OsunDailyNG reports that the former representative of the Patani Constituency in the Delta House of Assembly shared his insights during an interaction with journalists in Abuja on Thursday.
He emphasized that as 2025 approaches, achieving electoral success will not be possible through mere optimism.
While stating that the APC needs repentance, forgiveness and restoration, the former lawmaker highlighted the crucial role of political parties in a democratic system, noting that they serve as platforms for candidates, articulate policies, and facilitate decision-making processes.
He called for a shift in focus towards strategic planning to effectively challenge the well-established Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state, rather than allowing the ongoing conflicts among APC leaders in Delta to persist.
Timi remarked that this internal strife reflects a fundamental misunderstanding of the core principles that define the roles and responsibilities of political parties.
He concluded by stating that the anticipated โGodotโ will not come to resolve the issues within the political landscape.
He said: โInstead, the responsibility falls on individuals and parties to organise, strategise, and act.
โThis realisation is especially urgent for the Delta chapter of the APC, a party in opposition that seems lost in chaos, acrimony, and disunity.
โThe Delta APC, like any opposition party, has a choice to continue on its current path of disarray or rebuild itself as a formidable political force.โ
He added:ย โWaiting for external salvation is futile. The task of organising, strategising, and acting rests with party members. In politics, power is never handed over; it is contested and won.
โIf the Delta APC fails to unite and refocus, it risks permanent irrelevance. The time to build is now.
โIt is my ardent belief that APC needs repentance, forgiveness and restoration.
โWithout a unified pursuit of power, a political party becomes hollow, losing its essence and influence because it is an organised entity that seeks to gain and wield political power through elections.
โMembers of a party are united by shared goals and ideologies, working collectively to influence governance and policy.
โIt is unlike pressure groups that advocate for specific causes. Political parties aim for comprehensive control of the governmentโ.โ
Timi further said that in a democracy, opposition parties were indispensable, as they hold the government accountable, critique policies and propose alternatives.
โTheir role is not merely to oppose but to enrich democratic governance by preventing authoritarianism and preparing for future leadership.
โAn effective opposition ensures transparency, fosters public debate, and offers voters a credible alternative,โ he said
