The Minister of Solid Minerals, Dele Alake, has revealed that the earth tremors being experienced in parts of Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), are caused by accumulated stress.

The Minister, however, assured that residents have nothing to worry about as the tremors pose very low threat and are constantly being monitored by the government.

Alake made this known in a statement on Wednesday while reacting to the tremors which have been happening mainly around Mpape and Katampe.

He assured further that necessary updates would be provided and urged residents of Abuja to remain calm.

โ€œThis is to reassure everyone about the recent earth tremors in the Federal Capital Territory โ€” thereโ€™s no need to panic as we have been closely monitoring the situation,โ€ the statement reads.

โ€œOver the past few days, our Monitoring Station at Katampe has recorded several ground motions, with an increase in intensity and frequency from September 13 to 16.

โ€œThe tremors are caused by accumulated stress along identified faults and have multiple epicentres, mainly around Mpape and Katampe. Their intensity ranges from weak to light, posing a very low threat.

โ€œI advise residents not to panic, as these tremors are low in intensity. We are actively monitoring the situation and will provide updates as needed.

โ€œOur NGSA Seismic Stations are also being monitored in real-time for prompt alerts on any major events.โ€
