Buhari: Focus on him as great man, not his 8-year presidency – Bishop Kukah

The Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Most Rev. Dr Matthew Hassan Kukah, has called on Nigerians to look beyond the controversial tenure of late former president Muhammadu Buhari and remember him as a fundamentally good and patriotic man.
Bishop Kukah, while mourning the death of the former president, described him as a man who made meaningful contributions to Nigeria in both military and civilian capacities.
The cleric called for national reflection and compassion, rather than judgment centered solely on Buhariâs eight-year civilian rule.
âI think President Buhari should be remembered as a good man. We shouldnât focus on his eight years of being President of Nigeria, but as a great man who made his contributions to this country as a military officer, among many other things,â Bishop Kukah said.
The former Secretary General of the Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria also offered prayers for the repose of Buhariâs soul and comfort for his family and loved ones.
OSUNDAILY NG reports that Buhari, who died recently, served as Nigeriaâs Head of State between 1983 and 1985 and later as a democratically elected President from 2015 to 2023.

NNPCL retail outlets, others reduce fuel price

Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited has reduced its premium motor spirit price.
OSUNDAILY NG correspondent who went round NNPCL retail outlets in Abuja on Tuesday gathered that state-owned firms have also slashed their petrol pump price to N895 per litre from N910.
This comes as NNPCL filling station along Kubwa Expressway, Wuse Zone 4, Wuse Zone 6 (Berger), and other locations in Abuja visibly adjusted their fuel pump price to reflect the new price.
The reduction represents an N15 downward petrol price review in NNPCL retail outlets.
NNPCL is not alone in the petrol reduction; Dangote Refineryâs retail partner, MRS filling stations in Abuja, also reduced their petrol price by N25 to N885 per litre from N910.
Similarly, other filling stations in Abuja, such as Ranoil and Empire Energy, also reduced their petrol pump prices to N910 and N915 per litre on Tuesday from the previous N920 and N935.
The development comes hours after OSUNDAILY NG exclusively reports that Nigerian Petroleum Products Marketers announced a plan to slash petrol prices to between N900 and N920 per litre in Abuja.
Recall that Dangote Refinery reduced its ex-depot petrol price twice this July so far.

Protracted land dispute claims another life in Enugu community

The age-long land dispute between the Etiti Ngwo community in Udi Local Government Area and their neighbours in UmukuâApuke, Enugu South Local Government Area has claimed another life.
The latest development comes amid subsisting court judgments.
Residents of Etiti Ngwo are accusing their rivals of defying multiple court verdicts and violently encroaching on their land.
According to them, both the Appeal Court and the Supreme Court affirmed their ownership of the disputed area.
âThey started demolishing our properties despite the judgment,â the Chairman of Etiti Ngwo Central community, Eze Daniel Onyejuwaka told journalists on Monday.
He narrated how the crisis escalated after a meeting with the Deputy Governor and the Enugu State Boundary Committee on July 10, 2025.
âWhat actually happened is that on Thursday, July 10, 2025, we went to the office of the Deputy Governor, who is the head of the Boundary Committee of Enugu State.
âWe had a judgment over the dispute we have with the people of UmukuâApuke in the Enugu South Local Government.
âThe Appeal Court gave us judgment, and the Supreme Court also upheld it.
âThey later protested through their legal counsel to the Boundary Committee that we were trespassing. The state government intervened, and that same day, we were given judgment.
âSurprisingly, from that particular day, they went to the scene and started demolishing all the properties we had there.
âThey laid an ambush and killed Sochima in cold blood,â he disclosed.
Onyejuwaka said that despite Etiti Ngwoâs decision to remain lawâabiding, the opposing community launched an armed ambush.
âAs the last batch of our people were coming back from the site, the people of Umuguakom and their team laid ambush and started shooting.
âEventually, they shot one of our brothers, Sochima Onoh, who died in cold blood,â he narrated.
He accused the Managing Director of Enugu State Geographic Information System (ENGIS), Mr. Chiwetalu Nwatu, of fueling the crisis.
âDespite all the activities of the Deputy Governor to resolve this issue, he went ahead and started reallocating the land or admitting people of UmuâUgwu Akum Akwuke, who had already been defeated in court, giving double allocations and things like that. This is where they got the momentum to start attacking us.
âWe have lost three lives on this land,â he alleged.
The community leader made an emotional appeal:
âWe are only using this medium to call on the state government, particularly the Governor of Enugu State, the AttorneyâGeneral of the state, the AttorneyâGeneral of the Federation, and all the judges and lawyers in this country to come to our aid so that the judgment given to us by both the Appeal Court and the Supreme Court can be honoured.
âThis is the third person we are losing in this same land. We have lost the likes of Oliver Onoh, today again itâs Sochima, and particularly my own father died in the same process. It is so pathetic.â
Onyejuwaka said the Supreme Court verdict dates back to 2015, with subsequent attempts by their rivals to secure a stay of execution struck out as recently as 2021.
âIn three occasions that they filed to the Supreme Court, all of them were struck out.
âWhen they had judgment, we never stepped into that land. When they had a judgment from the High Court, we left there and allowed them to do whatever they wanted until we got up here. I just donât know why they are doing all this to us,â he further stated.
Despite the rising tension, he assured that Etiti Ngwo would not resort to violence:
âIf you look around me, itâs not as if I donât have people. But we are lawâabiding.
âThat is why we are appealing to the Governor of Enugu State to make sure he ends this matter before it turns again into a communal crisis.â
Eyewitness account
An eyewitness, Obinna Onyia, tearfully recounted the moment Sochima was killed:
âWe were on our way back and saw some people all wearing black.
âThey started pursuing us and we were running without direction. The land was slippery because it had rained.
âMy friend fell down, and I told him to stand up. He stood up and we continued running. He fell again and went into the bush to hide.
âThey came and met him inside the bush and shot him. I saw them, but I couldnât do anything.â
Officials react
When contacted, Mr. Chiwetalu Nwatu, Chief Executive Officer of ENGIS, denied the allegations, insisting he acted within his mandate.
âThe land in question is Crown Land and as such belongs to the government.
âRather than taking over the land and demolishing every property there, the administration of Governor Peter Mbah in its magnanimity is asking everyone with a property there to come forward for registration,â he stated.
Meanwhile, the Enugu State Police Command confirmed the killing.
Police Public Relations Officer, SP Daniel Ndukwe, said: âOn July 12, 2025, at about 3:35 pm, the Police received a distress report from Isiama AguâOvolo in Etiti Ngwo community, alleging that youths from UmuâUgwu Akum Akwuke stormed their area at Ovolo Layout and shot one Onoh Sochima.
âPolice operatives responded immediately and found the victimâs lifeless body with suspected gunshot wounds.
âHe was taken to the hospital, confirmed dead, and his body deposited in the mortuary for preservation and autopsy.â
SP Ndukwe added that preliminary investigations indicate the incident is linked to the ongoing land dispute, urging both communities to remain calm and avoid acts of selfâhelp while a full investigation continues.
As Enugu mourns yet another life lost, residents are calling on the state government and the courts to enforce their judgments and bring a lasting peace to the troubled land.
