Lawmakers from Benue State at the National Assembly have decried the worsening security conditions in the state.
The lawmakers, under the umbrella of Benue State National Assembly Caucus, at a press conference on Wednesday to address the alarming issue, called on the federal government and relevant security agencies to come to the rescue of the state.
Led by the caucus leader and Senate Minority Leader, Senator Abba Moro, the federal lawmakers called on both the federal and state governments, as well as security agencies, to fulfill their obligations in safeguarding the lives and properties of Benue residents.
The lawmakers decried the spate of killings and displacements occurring in various local government areas across the state, including Agatu, Apa, Guma, Makurdi, Gwer West, and Otukpo.
They urged swift action to curb the escalating attacks and prevent the emergence of vigilantism among the populace.
The caucus denounced the unlawful dissolution of elected councils in Benue State and the subsequent installation of caretaker committees by the state government.
They argued that such committees lack the necessary legitimacy and political will to effectively tackle the prevalent insecurity at the grassroots level.
Instead, they called for the establishment of democratically elected councils empowered to address security concerns within their respective local government areas.
Present at the press conference were notable figures including Senate Minority Leader Comrade Abba Moro, Senator Titus Zam representing Benue Northwest Senatorial District, and several members of the House of Representatives representing various federal constituencies within the state.
