A 20-year-old housewife, Lubabatu Yusuf Samaila, a resident of Bauchi, has expressed shock over the six-day detention of her husband after she filed a rape complaint against Deputy Immigration Superintendent, Sani Muazuw, who happens to be her husband’s benefactor.

This is as the victim urgently seeks the intervention of Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun regarding her rape complaint against Deputy Immigration Superintendent Sani Muazu.

OsunDailyNG earlier reported how the 20- year-old housewife, Yusuf had accused one Deputy Superintendent of the Nigerian Immigration Service, of allegedly raping her in the presence of her two children.

Recounting her ordeal to journalists in Bauchi on Monday, Lubabatu said the incident occurred when Mu’azu visited their residence on December 9, 2023.

According to the victim, her husband reported the incident, leading to Mu’azu’s arrest but he was later granted bail.

However, in a fresh turn of events, the police arrested and detained her husband, Yusuf Samaila, on defamation allegations raised by the suspect for six days.

Expressing displeasure by the lack of police action on her rape complaint, the victim turned to the human rights organisation, the African Child Development and Human Rights Protection in Bauchi.

“Despite petitioning the Bauchi State Commissioner of Police three weeks ago, there has been no resolution, causing further distress for me and my family, who are grappling with the aftermath of the rape incident and my husband’s arrest,” she said.

Similarly, Muhammed Alkassim, the founder of African Child Development and Human Rights Protection while addressing journalists in a press briefing on Thursday, criticised the Bauchi CP for neglecting the investigation of the alleged rape, asserting that Lubabatu is in desperate need of help and justice.

Alkassim accused the police of deviating from their primary duty, citing sections 1 and 2 of the newly established police act.

Alkassim disclosed that the organisation’s petition, submitted on December 22, 2023, has remained unaddressed by the CP for almost three weeks.

Alkassim revealed that on the day of submitting the petition, the suspect was promptly arrested but released unconditionally within 24 hours, even though facing serious charges.

He called for the immediate re-arrest of the suspect on behalf of the victim, declaring the organization’s commitment to pursuing justice.

But when contacted by OsunDailyNG, the Police Public Relations Officer, Superintendent Ahmed Mohammed Wakil, countered the civil society organization’s claims.

He stated that the CP had directed the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Criminal Investigation Department, to investigate the case.

Wakil confirmed that the investigation is ongoing and assured the public that the outcome will be disclosed.

Regarding the arrest of the victim’s husband, Wakil clarified that he was charged with criminal defamation, aiding and abetting offences, including kidnapping.

He said the charges stem from a petition filed against Yusuf Samaila by Nazir Umar and Co chambers on behalf of their client, Sani Saleh Mauzu which prompted the arrest of Lubabatu’s husband based on the allegations raised by the complainant.
