The fight for the national chairmanship of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) is reportedly down to two former governors, Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano state and Senator Tanko Al-Makura of Nasarawa state.
While some party stakeholders from North Central are making a determined effort to keep the chairmanship in their region, it appears President Bola Tinubu is leaning towards Ganduje.
This has sparked resistance from some party chiefs who feel the North West, Ganduje’s region, is over-represented with current positions of Speaker, House of Representatives, and Deputy Senate President.
Previously, rumours at the party’s National Secretariat suggested that Al-Makura would take over from Senator Abdullahi Adamu, the former National Chairman.
However, in a turn of events, it appears that Ganduje’s name was removed from Tinubu’s list of ministerial nominees, potentially clearing the path for his chairmanship bid.
A reliable party source told Vanguard, “President Tinubu has settled for the former Kano state governor, Ganduje, to replace Senator Adamu as the party’s national chairman. The President initially had Ganduje on the list for ministerial appointments, but due to his trust and confidence in the former governor, President Tinubu asked three state governors to convince Ganduje to accept the new assignment.”
