A Nigerian lawyer, Daniel Bwala has listed nine ‘facts’ the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) must come to terms with regarding the coup in Niger Republic.

The aide to the 2033 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, listed the supposed facts in a tweet via his Twitter handle on Wednesday.

The PDP chieftain, among other things, said Niger military junta would not bow to the threats and sanctions from ECOWAS because they are being supported externally.

He said the proposed military intervention in the West Afrcian country may cause a complex situation that may escalate to “ Africa spring” which might results in the ECOWAS heads of states themselves removed from power.

He wrote: “FACTS ECOWAS MUST COME TO TERMS WITH

1. The Niger military junta would not bow to their threats and sanctions- because they appear to have backup support somewhere

2. Military strike may cause a complex situation that may escalate to “ Africa spring” which might results in the ECOWAS heads of states themselves removed from power

3. Diplomacy, not grandstanding is the only option to return to democratic rule in Niger and elsewhere

4. Process leading to return to civilian rule may last up to a year and six months-because it will require conduct of fresh elections. Ask INEC how much time they took to conduct 2023 elections

5. The ECOWAS leaders must commit to the rule of law, democratic ideals and deliver good governance in their respective countries in other not to give room to this elements

6. Africa must re-set relationships with the WEST for mutual and shared benefits-the idea of master and puppets relationship would not be accepted by the civil populace in African countries-There is a growing anger in Africa

7. Political and public officers must be accountable to their people. Conduct of elections must reflect the wishes of the majority, whilst respect for the rights of the minority is protected and promoted

8. National/natural resources and prosperity must be shared equitably for development of human capital as well as create equal access to opportunities.

9. ECOWAS MUST re-define ECOWAS as a functional regional body built on robust intelligence driving decisions. Focus more on trade, security and integration

”I come in peace.”
