The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Osun State has stated that the appointment of chairmen and members of statutory commissions in the state was based on merit and competence.
The Osun PDP made this known in a statement on Tuesday in response to calls by the state chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the state governor, Ademola Adeleke, to reverse the appointment of Hashim Abioye as the Chairman of the Osun State Independent Electoral Commission (OSSIEC).
The PDP, in a statement signed by its chairman, Sunday Bisi, said, “The APC and others who joined them in their inglorious voyage ought to be purged of their ignorance that politics is different from state governance and administration.
“Appointments by Governor Adeleke so far have been merit-based, capacity-driven, and incontrovertibly competent.
“Many of Adeleke’s cabinet members and other appointees are not politicians and/or were not appointed based on any political consideration but on skill, capacity, and professionalism. Appointments into statutory boards are therefore not an exception in this context.
“As a matter of fact, most of the agencies are so critical that only competent professionals and skilled technocrats must be appointed.”
Abioye, before his recent appointment and swearing-in by the state governor, had been a PDP chieftain and Special Adviser on Legal Matters to Governor Adeleke.
DAILY POST had reported that the Osun APC, in a statement by its Chairman, Tajudeen Lawal, criticized Abioye’s appointment, insisting that there is nothing independent in the activities of the commission except its nomenclature with the appointment.
DAILY POST also reported that the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) in the state rejected Abioye’s appointment as OSSIEC Chairman, holding that his appointment was a desecration of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
