Cape Verde on Monday evening qualified for the quarter-final of the ongoing 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON, in Cote d’Ivoire.

This was possible after they defeated Mauritania in the Round of 16.

A late penalty goal from Ryan Mendes ensured Cape Verde defeated Mauritania 1-0 to book their place in the quarterfinal.

The Blue Sharks will now join Nigeria, Angola, Guinea and DR Congo in the last 8.

Cape Verde had played 2-2 against Egypt in their final Group B clash. They top the group with seven points from three matches.
