A group, South East Fact Check (SEFC) has condemned the trending video of a young girl who appeared to have a mental health crisis in Umuahia, Abia State, on Wednesday, after reportedly alighting from a tricycle.

In various online videos that are still circulating, the girl can be seen being ridiculed by a group of individuals while she wades through a water-filled ditch at Uchenna bus stop.

In these videos, the unfortunate girl was heard uttering incoherent words as she sat in the dirty water. Many of the people mocking her seemed to find amusement in her distress.

Some members of the onlookers, who concealed their faces while recording the videos, were heard making disparaging remarks, suggesting that her pursuit of a wealthy boyfriend might have led her into this predicament.

However, in one of the videos, a few voices can be heard inquiring about the victimโ€™s name and origin, apparently with the intention of offering assistance.

She was eventually pulled out of the filthy water by a Good Samaritan.

Reacting to this incident, the Umuahia-based group condemned the attitude of what they described as โ€œfake sympathizers.โ€

The chairman of the group, Mr Barry Odinkemmere, stated that it was absolutely wrong for anyone to dehumanize the unidentified girl by subjecting her to mockery due to her condition.

He expressed his disbelief that people would invest their time in recording videos of the girl while she was in distress without reaching out to relevant government agencies for intervention.

He urged the police to conduct a thorough investigation into the cause of the girlโ€™s unusual condition, ascertain who dropped her off, and determine her point of origin.

When DAILY POST contacted the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the Abia State Police Command, ASP Maureen Chinaka, she confirmed that the matter was already under investigation.

โ€œGood afternoon, the matter is under investigation, currently at the World Bank Divisional headquarters. Thanks,โ€ replied the PPRO in a message.
