The delegation of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has met with the military junta in Niger Republic.
OsunDailyNG reports that the delegation, led by former Nigerian military head of state, Gen Abdulsalami Abubakar (rtd), met with Nigerien Prime Minister Ali Lamine Zeine who received them at the airport.
The meeting reportedly lasted about 90 minutes after which they met with General Abdourahamane Tchiani, head of the junta for a fresh round of negotiations to restore civil rule in Niger.
The ECOWAS delegation also met with ousted President Mohamed Bazoum, who has been in detention since July 26.
Recall that the ECOWAS delegation had failed to meet President Mohamed Bazoum and the coup leader last month.
Tichiani later apologised when some Nigerian clerics met with him last weekend, saying they did not meet the delegation out of anger.
General Tchiani explained that it was painful that ECOWAS did not even try to hear their side of the story before ordering sanctions against them and issuing an ultimatum for them to leave office.
The coup leader added that they were angry but he however apologized to President Bola Tinubu.
