The suspended Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele was granted bail on Tuesday, but his legal counsel, Joseph Daudu, fears the Department of State Service (DSS) intends to re-arrest his client.
OsunDailyNG had earlier reported that Justice Nicolas Oweibo granted Emefiele bail for N20 million and one surety in the same amount.
This followed his arraignment by the DSS on charges of illegal possession of firearms.
Despite the judge asking Emefiele to be remanded in prison till he fulfils his bail condition, the DSS removed the vehicle that brought Emefiele to court shortly after his bail was granted, leading to speculation that they intended to return him to detention. Daudu informed the court of his fears regarding the DSSโs plans.
Daudu indicated to the court that they intend to complete the bail conditions promptly to ensure Emefieleโs freedom.
The judge, somewhat uncertain in light of the circumstances, asked Daudu to allow him to address other matters before the court and said he would return to Dauduโs concerns later.
Meanwhile, numerous DSS operatives, many in disguise, were seen near the courtroom, seemingly prepared to re-arrest Emefiele.
DSS had been in the detention of the secret police since his suspension as CBN Governor.
