The head coach of the Super Falcons of Nigeria, Randy Waldrum laments over the red card slammed on Deborah Abiodun on Friday, July 21.

The Nigerian young midfielder received a red card in the added time during the Super Falcons World Cup opener against Canada on Friday morning, which is the first red card of the 2023 edition of the tournament.

Deborah Abiodun was shown the red card after the VAR review confirmed that the 19-year-old Rivers Angels midfielder struck Canadaโ€™s Lawrenceโ€™s shin with her studs.

Before the red card, Abiodun was one of the hottest players in the Super Falcons colours. Due to her form, Coach Waldrum is disappointed that he would have to do without the midfielder when the Falcons take on co-hosts Australia on July 27.

Deborahโ€™s debut demonstrated her potential to play a significant role for the Nigerian national team. She received praise for her work in the middle of the field from spectators and other players who were aware of her skills.

Coach Waldrum said, โ€œDeborah is out of our next match but she was outstanding.โ€

While the suspended midfieder said, โ€œItโ€™s a dream come true to start in my first senior Womenโ€™s World Cup match. Iโ€™m happy and honoured by the privilege. A bit disappointed my debut ended the way it did. Iโ€™m sorry. Overall, Iโ€™m grateful for the chance and proud of my team today. Thanks for your support always.โ€

Meanwhile, the Super Falcons will benefit from the return of Rasheedat Ajibade and Halimatu Ayinde, who completed their two-game suspensions by missing the Canada match on July 21.

The two were given successive red cards during the semi-final match against Morocco at the 2022 Womenโ€™s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, which Morocco won 5-4 on penalties.

After Ayinde was red carded in the 48th minute, Ajibade was show a red card 26 minutes into the second half.

Both players missed the third-place game against Zambia in the WAFCON and then missed the World Cup opener on Friday to complete their two-game ban.
