A chieftain of the Kaduna State chapter of the Social Democratic Party, SDP, Bashir Zakariya, has died in an auto-crash along the Zaria–Kaduna highway on Thursday.
Until his death, Zakariya was the SDP chairman of Zone One senatorial district in Kaduna State.
According to party officials, the late Zakariya was travelling from Zaria to Kaduna when the crash occurred along the ever-busy highway, which led to his instant death.
In a statement by the publicity secretary of the party, the late Zakariya was described as a man of integrity, courage and vision, whose passion for justice and democracy inspired many within and outside the party.
The party spokesman said that the deceased stood for truth, spoke with conviction, and worked tirelessly to grow the SDP in Zone One and beyond.
Following the accident, the SDP in Kaduna appealed to the state and federal governments to intensify efforts to reduce the frequent accidents on the Zaria–Kaduna Expressway.

Police recover stolen vehicle in Akwa Ibom

The Akwa Ibom State Police Command said it has recovered a stolen Toyota Matrix vehicle with registration number KRJ 944 in Ikot Ekpene Local Government Area of the state.
The command’s spokesperson, DSP Timfon John, disclosed this in a press statement issued on Thursday, July 3, 2025, in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital.
The police spokesperson said operatives of the command, working along the Ikot Ekpene–Umuahia road, in collaboration with a Joint Task Force patrol team, on Monday, June 30, 2025, at about 4 pm, intercepted the said vehicle. She said the driver, who was unknown to the team, claimed to be a Naval officer when stopped.
She explained that upon interrogation, the suspect could not provide satisfactory identification or documentation to support his claim, adding, “as officers intensified questioning, the suspect suddenly abandoned the vehicle and fled into a nearby forest. All efforts to apprehend him at the time proved abortive.”
John said preliminary investigation revealed that the vehicle was reported stolen in Rivers State.
The Rivers State Police Command was immediately contacted, and a man (name withheld) came forward, presenting valid documents and confirming ownership of the car.

APC breaks silence on coalition

The ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, has described the newly formed opposition coalition party as hoaxers and self-obsessed merchants of vendetta.
This was contained in a statement by the party’s spokesman, Felix Morka, on Thursday.
He called the unveiling of the coalition a roll call of Nigeria’s me-or-nothing politicians, who equate their selfish interest with the interest of Nigerians, and who cannot bear to be out of the corridors of power and patronage.
He said the coalition members are desperate to grab power for themselves by guile and subterfuge, adding that they lay claim to an immoral birthright to power, even while draped in an odious record of betrayal of public trust and rapacious public service.
Recall that the opposition coalition on Wednesday adopted the African Democratic Congress, ADC, as a platform to lock horns with the APC in the forthcoming 2027 general elections.
The new opposition coalition party also chose former Senate President, David Mark, as its interim National Chairman, with former Osun State governor, Rauf Aregbesola, as interim National Secretary.
Reacting to the unveiling, the APC said the speech delivered by David Mark was disgracefully vacant, without substance or purpose, adding that it was nothing but stitches of untruths and baseless allegations against the APC-led administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
“From beginning to end, Senator Mark said nothing about the purpose of the so-called coalition other than a loud declaration of desperation for power. What value does the coalition bring to Nigerians? Why should any Nigerian be concerned about a coalition of a bunch of egotistical maniacs for whom power and patronage are the oxygen on which their lives depend?
“One would have expected that, after months of vacillating between the devil and the deep blue sea, in search of a host platform, Senator Mark and his co-travelers would take Nigerians seriously enough by telling them what their coalition would do differently regarding the administration’s bold economic and sectoral policy reforms.
“What key alternative policy approaches would the coalition implement, and with what prospects of success compared to the high value and transformative impact of the administration’s reform policies?
“What exactly is the philosophical or ideological leaning of the coalition or its new party, aside from desperation for power at all cost, by all means necessary and unnecessary?
“Senator Mark’s speech was loud in its silence to these questions because himself and his coalition partners are disgracefully clueless, without a care or concern about Nigeria and Nigerians, only filled with wolfish quest for power for their own mendacious end,” the statement read in part.
