Sell Port Harcourt, Warri refineries, they drain economy - MAN tells Nigerian Govt

Director General of the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria, MAN, Segun Ajayi-Kadiri, has called on the Federal Government to sell or privatize Warri, Port Harcourt and other country’s state-owned refineries.
This was as he describes them as a pure drain on the Nigerian economy.

Ajayi-Kadiri, who made this call on Tuesday, when he appeared as a guest on ‘Politics Today’, a programme on Channels Television, argued that the government should hand them over to the private sector for efficient management and productivity.

“If you ask me, the government should just sell these refineries. Give them to private sector people who will run them efficiently and be able to deliver. When something belongs to everybody, it belongs to nobody,” Ajayi-Kadiri

It will be recalled that the federal government began efforts in 2024 to revive its four state-owned refineries, with the old Port Harcourt and Warri refineries partially restored, while rehabilitation continues on the second Port Harcourt unit and the Kaduna refinery.

The MAN DG, however, decried that the continued government ownership of the facilities has not only proven ineffective but also unfair to the Nigerian people, particularly in a country brimming with capable entrepreneurs.

“Those four refineries are a pure drain on the Nigerian economy, and it is not fair to the Nigerian people.

“We should have a situation where we are able to speak truth to ourselves and encourage private sector investment,” he added.

Officials of the All Progressives Congress, APC, from Gayam Electoral Ward of Lafia Local Government Area have suspended the state chairman of the party, Aliyu Bello, over alleged anti-party activities.

Ibrahim Iliyasu, chairman of APC in Gayam Ward, announced the suspension at a press conference on Tuesday in Lafia.
The ward chairman, who read the suspension letter signed by himself and 13 other ward executives, said the decision followed an investigation into complaints made by ward members regarding the chairman’s anti-party conduct.

“We have credible evidence and reports that he has openly promoted and campaigned for a member of another political party contrary to Article 21 (1), (11), (VII) of the party’s constitution,” he said.

Iliyasu noted that the actions of Bello had brought embarrassment to the party and undermined the credibility of its efforts among members.

“We have decided to suspend you with immediate effect in line with the powers vested in us as ward executive under Article 21 (D), (I), (III) of the constitution of our party and having consulted widely with stakeholders within the ward,” he said.

He further stated that the decision would be communicated to the Lafia Local Government Area Executive, the State Executive Committee, and the National Working Committee of the party for ratification and further necessary action.

He urged the suspended APC chairman to refrain from parading himself as a member or official of the party pending the conclusion of the process.
