The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has berated theย Federal Government for accusing the presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the just concluded election, Peter Obi, of treason.
OsunDaily News reported that theย Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, had warned the LP flag bearer against inciting Nigeriansย to violence over the outcome of the presidential election.
In an interview with some foreign media organizations in Washington, United States on Tuesday, Mohammed said it is wrong for Obi to seek redress in court over the outcome of the presidential election and on the other hand, incite people to violence.
The minister said the statement by Obiโs running mate, Datti Baba-Ahmed, that the President-elect, Bola Tinubu, should not be sworn in as president amounted to treason.
He had said: โObi and his running mate, Datti Baba-Ahmed, cannot be threatening Nigerians that if the President-elect, Bola Tinubu, of the All Progressives Congress is sworn-in on May 29, it will be the end of democracy in Nigeria.
โThis is treason. You cannot be inviting insurrection, and this is what they are doing. Obiโs statement is that of a desperate person, he is not the Democrat that he claimed to be. A democrat should not believe in democracy only when he wins the election.โ
In a chat with The Punch on Tuesday night,ย the PDP Deputy National Publicity Secretary, Ibrahim Abdullahi, said the treason allegation against Obi was wrong and baseless.
Abdullahi warned the federal government against any attempt to arrestย the former Anambra State Governor or his running mate, Datti Baba-Ahmed.
The PDP stalwart stated that arresting Obi โwill be detrimental to national peace and developmentโ, adding that the thought of a possible arrest is senseless and as ill-advised.
