15 suspects arraigned for stealing Christmas gifts meant for Ibadan family heads

Fifteen suspects arrested in connection with the attack on and stealing from the bus carrying Christmas gifts meant for some compound heads in Ibadan have been arraigned in court.

DAILY POST recalls that some people on Thursday attacked a bus carrying gifts meant for some compound heads in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State.

The suspects during the attack carted away the items given to the compound heads in the Oja Oba area of Ibadan.

DAILY POST learnt that 15 suspects arrested in connection with the crime have been arraigned in court before a Grade A Customary Court sitting in Mapo on Friday.

Police prosecutor Inspector Alex Odogun, while reading the charge sheet before the suspects, said: โ€œOn the 21st day of December 2023, at about 2 pm at Ojaโ€™Ba Area Ibadan, in the jurisdiction of Grade A Customary Court, Mapo, Ibadan, [you] did conspire together to commit felony to wit: stealing and thereby commit an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 516 of Criminal Code Cap 38 Vol II Law of Oyo State of Nigeria 2000.

โ€œThe suspects and others now at large on the same date, time, and place in the aforementioned Grade A Customary Court did steal the following items: (1) 18 bags of 50kg rice, valued at one million, eighty thousand naira only; (2) 18 live turkeys, valued at one hundred and eighty thousand naira only; and (3) 18 kegs of 5 litres of King Groundnut Oil, valued at one million, sixty-two thousand nairaโ€•all valued at two million, three hundred and thirty-two thousand naira only properties of the Association of Mogajis of Ibadanland, and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 390 (9) of Criminal Code Cap 38 Vol II law of Oyo State, Nigeria 2000.โ€

The suspects pleaded not guilty to all the charges.

Akintayo, while delivering her judgement, gave each of the suspects a bail condition of N200,000 with two sureties in like sum.

She said the sureties must possess a National Identification Number, NIN, and a source of identification such as a driverโ€™s licence and a passport photograph.

She ordered that the suspects be remanded at the Agodi correctional facility until they meet the bail condition.

The case was then adjourned until December 28, 2023, for further hearings.
