Yobe State House of Assembly has extended the tenure of chairmen and members of the Caretaker Management Committees of the 17 local governments areas of the state for a period of six months.
The House made the extension while approving a request presented by the executive arm of government requesting the confirmation of the re-appointment of the chairmen.
The Leader of the House, Hon. Nasiru Hassan Yusuf, who moved the motion on the floor of the House, said the confirmation of the re-appointment of the chairmen and members of the management committee followed the expiration of their six-month tenure
The lawmaker noted that the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended empowered the House to extend the tenure of the chairmen and members of the caretaker management committee pending the election of executive chairmen of the local governments in the state.
Presiding over the sitting, the Speaker of the House, Right Honourable Chiroma Buba Mashio called on the confirmed reappointed chairmen to work hard to ensure more dividends of democracy to people in the rural areas.
The development has dashed hopes of conducting local government elections earlier scheduled for November 25.
In another development, the House has amended the law that established the Yobe State University to reduce the tenure of the Vice Chancellor, Registrar, Bursar and Chief Librarian of the University.
Chairman, House committee on higher education, Hon. Ishaku Sani Audu said the amendment of the law had reduced the tenure of the four principal officers from two terms of four years to a single term of five years.
The legislator further explained that the amendment would enable the university to operate in line with international best practices.
