Abia State has closed more private schools for not meeting the expected educational standards set by the state government.

The closure of the schools was carried out in the state during the ongoing school inspection programme.

The disclosure was made by the stateโ€™s Commissioner for Information and Culture, Okey Kanu, while briefing journalists on the outcome of this weekโ€™s Executive Council meeting.

He explained that the measures were taken in line with the โ€œReclaim Our Schools Initiativeโ€ programme launched by the state government to enhance the education standard in the state.

Kanu noted that 900 schools had so far been inspected across the state, with some of them falling below the expected standard.

โ€œThe inspection of schools is ongoing. At the last count, about 900 schools had been inspected.

โ€œA few of the schools have not been so lucky. They fell short of the required standard and were shut down.

โ€œThat exercise is ongoing, and it speaks to the determination of the state government to reform the education sector,โ€ Commissioner for Information and Culture, Okey Kanu said.

He further said that more roads would be commissioned by Governor Alex Otti, while the stateโ€™s Ministry of Works has also been directed to begin rehabilitation works on Finbarโ€™s road and Ahieke-Lodu roads in Umuahia.

Also speaking during the press briefing, the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Uzor Nwachukwu, said that the newly nominated Transition Council Chairmen in the 17 LGAs would statutorily serve for 6 months in office, renewable by law.

He also added that the lists of councilors to serve in the respective LGAs would soon be made public.
