The President of Cameroon, Paul Biya on Wednesday made major changes to the countryโ€™s ministry of defence.

The decision of Biya is coming as coups continue to spread on the African continent.

Some Presidents are taking proactive steps by reshuffling defence portfolios.

Among the posts reshuffled were the delegate to the presidency in charge of defence, air force staff, navy, and the police.

Biya came to power in a coup dโ€™etat in 1982. His early years on the saddle were marred by reports of oppression and human rights violations.

Although he subsequently allowed multiparty elections in the country, the 90-year-old has remained president since he rode to power.

Rwanda President Retires Over 1,000 Military Officers Amidst Coups In Africa

In a related development, the president of Rwanda, Paul Kagame has approved the retirement of 95 military generals and senior officers as well as 930 junior soldiers.

This move is coming against the backdrop of the recent coups in Niger Republic and Gabon.

The development was announced in a statement published on the Rwanda Defense Forceโ€™s official website on Wednesday.

Top on the list of retirees is General James Kabarebe, the countryโ€™s former Minister of Defence and Chief of Defense Staff.

Until his retirement, General Kabarebe served as the special advisor to the president on security.
