The father of Olga Carmona, whose goal won Spain the 2023 FIFA Womenโs World Cup, has passed away.
OsunDailyNG reported that Spain on Sunday clinched their first Womenโs World Cup trophy after defeating England in the 2023 FIFA Womenโs World Cup.
Olga Carmonaโs 29-minute strike was the difference in the breathtaking encounter on Sunday. The Spanish women held on to see the game to the end as England tried in vain to crawl back into the game.
However, after the intense match and celebrations of victory, Carmona received the news about her fatherโs death.
Carmona had, after the final whistle, joined her teammates celebrating and dancing on the field, and participated normally during the trophy presentation.
However, a few moments after the match, Football Federation released a statement to confirm the Spanish playerโs fatherโs death.
The statement on the official social media page of the federation reads: โThe RFEF deeply regrets to communicate the passing of Olga Carmonaโs father. The footballer learned this sad news after the conclusion of the World Cup final. We send our most heartfelt condolences to Olga and her family in this time of profound sorrow. We love you, Olga. You are a part of Spanish football history.โ
Earlier during the World Cup victory celebration, Carmona revealed a shirt sharing the word โMerchiโ โ a message meant to pay tribute to her best friendโs late mother, who had recently passed away.
She explained the celebration after the match to Spanish broadcasters, saying: โFirst of all, I want to say that this victory, this achievement, goes to the mother of one of my best friends who has recently passed away.
โI celebrated the goal with her shirt and from here, I dedicate this to the whole family with all my love.โ
During the time, the Real Madrid star was not aware of her fatherโs demise.
